LINEAX POSITIONERS |
|
Linear motor driven stage systems are built for acceleration and speed. These stages lack the inertia and mechanical gearing advantage of traditional screw driven stages and are therefore more application specific. The applied payload directly affects the acceleration rate according to Newton’s familiar relationship, Force = Mass x Acceleration (F=MA). The ability of the stage to reach a specific speed, will affect the cycle time or throughput. Linear motor drive generates substantial peak force when supplied the necessary current by the servo amplifier. With higher driving current, higher positioning forces are generated. The higher driving current also generates heat due to resistive losses in the coils. When the application requires extremely high-precision positioning, the effect of temperature should be assessed to avoid discovering undesirable effects due to thermally induced distortion, over either short term or in continuous operation. In any high velocity or high acceleration applications, temperature increase due to heating from coils must be considered in the first system concepts. If necessary cooling methods including ventilation, forced air fans or substantial heat sinking devices must be included to dissipate waste heat and keep within the permissible limits of the coils continuous thermal rating 140ºC. There is an over-temperature sensor included in LINEAX. This device has a characteristic time constant and serves to protect the coil from uniform temperature increase. Protecting the coil from over-current with the servo drive is an essential protective measure. |
