Position Feedback

Linear encoders, with precision matched to end-user requirements, are mounted integral to the positioning table. Encoder installation features ultra high flex cables routed through a protected integral cable loop. The electrical interface is a single-point DB-type connector conveniently located at the end of the stage. A modular cable loop system is used that allows the cable loop to be replaced within minutes for high duty cycle applications. Normal cable life is in excess of 5 million bends. Depending on architecture, travel length, customer preference, operating environment, payload related wiring and cost issues, there are several cable management options available. Sinusoidal commutation and the use of a high-resolution encoder allow LINEAX systems to find and hold position accurately to within microns.

LINEAX stages are equipped with high performance, non-contacting opto-electronic linear encoder systems in user specified precision. These encoders provide position feedback signals for the motion controller. Standard LX products use encoders with a 20-micron grating pitch. Sophisticated electronic counting and dividing electronics are then employed to generate higher precision position data. The electronics divide the native 20-micron step into smaller sub-steps ranging from 5 microns down to 100 nanometers. In all cases the methods used are non-contacting and hysteresis free. Limit and home data is also provided on these encoder scales. Home index pulses are located 10mm from each end of travel and repeat every 50mm along the travel.

The encoder system consists of ruled scale, and read head. These devices work in cooperation to measure stage position and convert this information into data useful for the control system.

The precision position scale is fully integrated with the base. Three functions are performed by individual tracks on the encoder scale. The primary track features the position gratings these determine the native resolution of the scale. The second track operates the two end-of-travel limit switches. The third track is a series of index/home markers every spaced every 50mm

The read head is an independent module, critically aligned to the scale. The read head, all solid-state device, is fully sealed and capable of turning the sinusoidal analogue signal created by interaction with the scale into an amplified 4-channel TTL pulse train. Where the pulse frequency generated is proportional to velocity.
