LINEAX MOTOR COMMUTATION

To make coherent extended motions over the fixed magnet array in the base, the current in the coils must be commutated, switched from forward to reverse. The brush-less 3-phase motors used in LINEAX systems are commutated electronically in the servo amplifier. Either a sinusoidal or six-step current waveform is used to control commutation profile. Hall Effect Devices (HEDs) are used as non-contacting positioning sensors to initialize the simple six-step control scheme. These devices are also used to facilitate initial sinusoidal motor phasing without requiring motion.

For high precision positioning, NUTEC commutates the 3 coils with sinusoidal waveforms yielding 15% higher efficiency vs. six-step method, zero cogging, better positioning performance and better velocity control. For all high precision applications, the NUTEC standard is sinusoidal commutation.
